#15 of 40 Things

For several years I’ve kept track of the films I see in theaters, but I’ve never kept track of every single film I see in cinema, on television and on DVD. So I chose to do that in my 40th year, mostly from the curiosity of just how many movies I really do watch throughout a year. Last year wasn’t nearly as numerous as years before, but I love that I have an accurate accounting of my entertainment choices during a single year. And I loved doing this so much that I’ve continued it, keeping record of all movies and TV viewings every single day. It will either reveal me to be highly interesting (ha!) or even more quirky than I ever realized!

inadvertent accomplishment (#35 of 40 things)

When I added #35 to my list of 40 Things I planned to spend a full day in a specific location in Dallas, and when I never made it happen I assumed that would simply be one more thing to push into the future. But now I’ve remembered that I actually did visit a sculpture garden, last summer, on the day I walked among the cattle. It was inadvertent, this garden visit. I just stumbled across a tiny little spot in the middle of a concrete city block, and I collapsed into the shade for no other reason than to escape the heat and prevent the dehydration that was threatening to overtake me. Thankfully, I did recognize where I was, that I was surrounded by art and had a camera in my hand, although I’ve only just realized that those moments qualified as my #35. Funny how things work out.

a day in the Dallas Arts District (#25 of 40 things)

Just over a year ago I set out to accomplish 40 things in my 40th year. Though my 41st birthday has now passed and I’m still working on the list, I did accomplish quite a few things and am just now getting around to posting them. I do plan to continue until I cross off every last item, but for now I am content with inching toward the goal.

On July 29, 2009, I spent the day in the Dallas Arts District in order to cross off #25. I only had enough time for one museum — and even then I only managed to get through 3/4 of the exhibits in the four hours I had available for browsing — but it was incredibly good for my soul. I can spend all day in art museums and return in a couple months and spend another full day without ever getting bored. I’m in awe of the collections, in awe of the names painted in corners of masterful works. On this particular day, I thrilled the most to be standing less than three feet from an actual Jackson Pollock canvas. It truly took my breath away, as did the reminder that he painted his masterpieces in the 1940s! It’s true that the greatest artists are always ahead of their time. And the Dallas Museum of Art is filled with them.

leisurely lunch in a pub (#34 of 40 things)

There’s no good reason I waited until the final week of my 40th year to spend a leisurely lunch in a pub, but I’m so glad I made the time for #34 on my 40 Things list. My intent was to dine on a truly British entree but during this week I was still recovering from a terrible bout with a nasty virus, so I played it safe and went for the standard fish ‘n chips. I do plan to return for the Scotch Egg, and it’ll definitely happen before my next birthday rolls around, but my choice on this day was the perfect option. And lunch was delightful, allowing me time to return to my much-delayed reading and just be still. The pub was quiet on this Monday and I was one of only 5 people dining on the lower level, but the gray weather and steady rain seemed most appropriate for this goal. And so I crossed one more item off the list.
